The explosion that occurred on Saturday night in a restaurant in downtown Moscow, which left at least 5 dead and 21 injured, is believed to have been an attack aimed at the commander-in-chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, Alexandr Chaiko, who was reportedly at the location celebrating his birthday.

According to Russian media reports, at 19:55 local time an explosive device was detonated in the Balzi Ross restaurant, located in Kudrinskaya square in Moscow.
This happened after a woman tried to bring the explosive device into the venue. Although a security guard prevented her access and tried to inspect the package, it exploded anyway, causing the death of its carrier, the guard, and others affected.

Chaiko, who turned 55 on July 27 and survived the explosion, is said to have reserved and closed the venue to celebrate his birthday according to Russian media, which in turn cite Telegram channels.
The head of the Russian Aerospace Forces was appointed to this position in May and, prior to that, led the Eastern Military District of that country during the invasion of Ukraine.
