U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed being “convinced” that before the current White House occupant Donald Trump’s term ends, Cuba will be on an “irreversible” path toward “a very different future.”
“I am convinced that Cuba, before this Government ends, will be on an irreversible path toward a very different future,” the senior official stated in an interview for Katie Miller’s podcast.
In this regard, Rubio admitted that there will be a “transition” on the Caribbean island, although noting that “you cannot have something standing for 70 years – that takes root – and then think that, overnight, everything will be uprooted and something completely new will be planted.”
In that sense, the North American official pointed to the countries of Eastern Europe as a “good example” of this, which, he noted, “took between three and five years to really become what they are today.”
Rubio, one of the most critical voices of the Cuban government, has maintained that the fact that Cuba is “safe, stable and (aligned) with the United States” benefits the country’s “national interest.”
“Cuba is undoubtedly a priority for us because it benefits our national interest,” the Secretary of State emphasized, recalling that although he maintains a “personal connection” with the Caribbean island, he works for the United States.
Rubio’s words come in a year in which Washington has intensified its policy of imposing sanctions against the island, in an attempt to increase pressure on the Cuban authorities, whom it has even threatened with military intervention to achieve a change of government.
Regarding this context, independent United Nations human rights experts have recently condemned the sanction packages imposed by Washington against Havana, stating that they constitute an attempt to “alter the constitutional order of a sovereign state” through “threats and coercion.”
