At least 240 people have died as a result of the 7.4 earthquake recorded in Colombia last Monday, August 10, according to local authorities.
The figure, provided by local departments, differs from that presented by the Colombian Association of Capital Cities, which estimated at least 190 deaths from the earthquake.
According to local media, more than a thousand injured and about a hundred affected structures have been reported as a result of the emergency.
The president of Colombia Abelardo De La Espriella signed during Tuesday night a decree by which he declared a national disaster in Colombia.
Some local authorities have decreed a curfew after the first incidents occurred, including looting, and also in an attempt to facilitate the work of rescue and emergency teams. Likewise, security on the streets has been reinforced with the presence of the Army.
The Colombian president, Abelardo de la Espriella, is expected to spend these days visiting the affected areas, having already passed through Quibdó, the capital of Chocó, where the epicenter of what is now the worst earthquake to hit Colombia in ten years has been recorded.
The Colombian president has announced the delivery of the first financial aid to more than 1,400 affected families to rebuild their homes, as well as the transfer of the injured to medical centers in Medellín.
