The German consul in Costa Rica, Mario Genz, drowned this Saturday in the Central American country after the boat he was navigating capsized, according to local media.

Genz, 53 years old, died after a water accident at the La Laguna Recreational Center, in Río Cuarto de Alajuela – about 75 kilometers north of the Costa Rican capital, San José -, according to the regional Fire Department.
The death of the diplomat was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Costa Rica on its X account, which expressed its “deep condolences” for the death of the consul.
“We express our deepest condolences to his family and colleagues, reiterating our support in these moments of grief”, the Foreign Ministry stated in the post.
The consul, a fan of diving, athletics, and cycling, lost his life when the kayak he was navigating capsized, reported the local press.
According to the media outlet Panorama, the incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. in Chile), when authorities received a report of a person submerged in the lagoon.
Upon arrival, the Costa Rican Fire Department and Red Cross teams found a man without vital signs, who had been removed from the water by recreational center staff.
After almost an hour of resuscitation by paramedic personnel, he was declared deceased.
The local Red Cross spokesperson, Jeremy Poveda, detailed that three ambulances and a first intervention vehicle (VPI) responded to the emergency. He also confirmed that the patient suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest.
