This Monday, White House officials announced the resignation of Dan Driscoll as United States Secretary of the Army, in a departure that comes after months of tensions with the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth.

According to Axios, Driscoll was considered an influential figure within the Donald Trump administration and had gained prominence for his involvement in matters beyond the usual functions of his position. Among them was his intervention in diplomatic efforts to try to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The White House highlighted his management and assured that the official contributed to implementing Trump’s defense agenda.
“Secretary Driscoll has been extremely effective in advancing President Trump’s agenda to make the United States strong again in the Department of the Army,” said White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly.
According to Kelly, Driscoll exercised “exceptional leadership” during military operations and worked to strengthen the Army’s readiness and operational capability.
The departure occurs amid a deteriorated relationship between Driscoll and Hegseth. According to The New York Times, one of the points of conflict was a dispute related to officer promotions.
The outlet reported that Hegseth had removed four officers from a promotion list—two Black men and two women—after Driscoll refused to do so.
Previously, several local media had reported another confrontation between the two over the retention of Colonel David Butler, one of Driscoll’s main advisors. According to Fox News, Driscoll resisted pressures to remove him. Butler had previously worked as a spokesperson for General Mark Milley, who maintained a confrontational relationship with Trump.

Driscoll’s closeness to Vice President JD Vance reportedly helped protect his position within the administration, according to the background released about the dispute.
Driscoll had a rapid rise within the Trump government. He was informally known as “the drone guy” due to his work in modernizing military capabilities and incorporating new technologies.
As Secretary of the Army, the highest civilian position over that branch of the Armed Forces, he was in charge of its budget and a structure that includes more than one million personnel among active duty, National Guard, and reserve, as well as more than 330,000 civilian employees.
His profile also expanded towards foreign policy. In November, he traveled to Ukraine to present a Washington-driven peace plan, becoming the highest-ranking official of the Trump administration to visit the country for that purpose.
The proposal included significant concessions by Ukraine and has not yet succeeded in ending the conflict. After meeting with Driscoll, however, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, agreed to move forward with negotiations.
Driscoll had also received support from some Democratic senators during his confirmation process. Sixteen voted in favor of his appointment, although other legislators questioned his experience to assume civilian leadership of the Army.
His departure ends the tenure of who had been the youngest Secretary of the Army in U.S. history and who, during his brief time in office, combined military modernization with an unusual involvement in diplomatic initiatives of the Trump administration.
