The death toll from the devastating floods recorded last week in northern Nepal, in a border area with China, has already exceeded the threshold of 1,100 deaths, according to Nepalese authorities, who maintain the number of missing persons above 3,900.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has stated in a statement published through social media that to date 1,114 bodies have been recovered, including 348 in Chitwan, plus 218 in East Nawalparasi and 190 in West Nawalparasi.
The agency has highlighted that emergency teams have so far rescued 11,993 people, including 273 foreigners who have been evacuated by air, while stating that a total of 292 people were injured in the disaster, 182 of whom have already been discharged.
It has also emphasized that more than 21,300 agents, including 7,900 police officers and 9,200 military personnel, are deployed to support search and rescue operations, as well as the delivery of essential aid to those affected.

To these figures are added at least 16 deaths and around 550 missing persons in Chinese territory – including 261 foreign nationals -, as reported by the authorities of the Asian giant, as well as three bodies recovered in India.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the United Nations Secretariat, Stéphane Dujarric, said at a press conference that the response to the flood “is entering a new phase.” “Authorities are intensifying aid efforts and recovery operations,” he said.
“For thousands of affected families, the priority now is to receive humanitarian assistance, recover and identify the remains of their loved ones, locate missing relatives, reunite separated children, and facilitate access to psychosocial support,” Dujarric explained, estimating nearly 3,500 displaced by the disaster.
