Sweden’s Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, announced his resignation this Thursday due to the “complicated conditions for forming the next government” following the elections held on Sunday, whose preliminary results give victory to the coalition of four leftist parties led by the Social Democratic Party.

“The preliminary vote count after the parliamentary elections has concluded. The election results could have created a complex situation for forming the next government, given that the various positions taken by the parties before election day could pose obstacles for any potential government or coalition maker,” he said in a letter sent to the Speaker of Parliament, Andreas Norlen.
Thus, he emphasized that “a constructive stance from the parties with parliamentary representation will be necessary to ensure that a prime minister can be agreed upon and that a new government manages to obtain support for its state budget,” before advocating to “engage in talks with all parties” to assemble a “stable and effective” Executive.

Kristersson stressed that it is now in Norlen’s hands to “lead the next steps,” while specifying that, for this reason, he requests that his resignation be accepted, shortly after the electoral commission gave 176 seats to the bloc led by Magdalena Andersson, ahead of the 173 obtained by the conservative coalition of the outgoing prime minister.
