The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated this Wednesday that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have launched an attack in the last few hours against an oil terminal in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, hours before the start of an international economic forum in the city and amid the war unleashed in February 2022 by the invasion order signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky highlighted that “important facilities on Russian territory” have been attacked by Ukrainian forces and pointed to “good results.” He noted that among the places attacked is the aforementioned oil terminal, “about 1,100 kilometers” from the border between Russia and Ukraine, as well as “purely military targets at the Kronstadt base.”
“Another target was a company in the Tambov region dedicated to the production of Russian weaponry. The distance to the front is almost 600 kilometers,” he specified in a message posted on social media. “I thank our soldiers for their precision. Ukraine’s long-range sanctions plan is being implemented with the necessary precision to bring peace closer,” he concluded.
The governor of Saint Petersburg, Alexander Beglov, confirmed in a message on social media that “infrastructures” in Kronstadt, Kirovski, and Krasnoselski “have been attacked by drones from the Ukrainian Nazis.” “Multiple facilities have suffered damage,” he said, while confirming that there are also “several injured,” although no fatalities have been reported.
The attack on Saint Petersburg took place hours before the start of the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), which this year has as its main theme “Pragmatic Dialogue, the Path to a Stable Future” and will feature the participation of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov; Minister of Economic Development Maximo Reshetnikov; and Minister of Industry Anton Alijanov, among other senior Russian officials, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian Air Force indicated that air defense systems have shot down 189 of the 198 drones launched by Russian troops in the last few hours, before confirming hits in seven locations. “The attack continues, as there are enemy drones in the airspace,” it warned, while urging the population to respect safety rules.
Meanwhile, Moscow has limited its reaction to stating that they will continue as before. “Our responses will be systemic, and in fact they already are,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who referred any assessment on this matter to the Ministry of Defense officials.
However, he took the opportunity to point out that the so-called “special operation,” which began four and a half years ago with the invasion of eastern Ukraine, serves, among other things, “to prevent this type of attacks.”
