Venezuelan authorities summoned the Iranian ambassador in Caracas, Ali Chegini, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to deliver a note of protest for “derogatory” and “improper” expressions that, without giving further details, they have assured were directed against the institutions and authorities of Venezuela.

According to press reports, the statements that prompted Caracas’ diplomatic action are related to the context of Iranian negotiations with the United States, within the framework of the war in the Middle East. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi reportedly said that “this is not Venezuela, where they take one person and all the others get scared and back down.”
“Today, the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Venezuela was summoned to the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry to deliver a note of protest for the derogatory and improper expressions about the institutions and authorities of Venezuela”, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said in a message on social media.
Immediately after, the ministerial body, which did not specify what those statements were or who made them, demanded “the cessation of any allusion or comparison that undermines the dignity, sovereignty, institutionality, or good name of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.”

The call was made reiterating Caracas’ position on “the foundations of relations between all countries,” defending “mutual respect, sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs, and other principles of International Law.”
Both countries maintain a historic bilateral relationship and have strategic alliances in areas such as science, technology, commerce, and the oil sector.
