The Workers’ Party (PT) will proclaim this Sunday the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as its candidate for the presidential elections in October, in which he will seek a fourth non-consecutive term, an unprecedented event in the country’s political history.

At 80 years old, Lula will once again compete for the Presidency accompanied again by the current vice president Geraldo Alckmin, who will repeat as the vice-presidential candidate.
If he wins the elections and the bill proposing to eliminate re-election prospers, Lula would also become the last president of Brazil to serve two consecutive terms.
The president enters the campaign with favorable social indicators, after the poverty and unemployment rates reached historic lows. However, his administration faces criticism for the performance of the economy.
Currently, Brazil maintains an annual interest rate of 14.25%, while economic growth slowed from 3.4% in 2024 to 2.3% in 2025. For this year, projections point to an expansion close to 2%.

Added to this is the deterioration of public accounts. According to the background, the fiscal deficit approaches 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the public debt reaches 82% of GDP, factors that are shaping up as one of the main attack fronts of the opposition, along with security.
In the opposition bloc, the scenario remains fragmented after the disqualification and conviction of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest after being sentenced to 27 years in prison for the attempted coup against Lula after the 2022 elections.
Although his son, Flávio Bolsonaro, has pushed efforts to unify the opposition, the sector arrives divided at the October 4 elections.
According to the analysis, the Brazilian right is divided between traditional conservatism, the far-right identified with Bolsonaro, and an anti-system current, having as the main point of agreement their rejection of President Lula and the Workers’ Party.
