Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, stated this Thursday that the declaration of “economic war” issued by the US president, Donald Trump, against Tehran responds to an “unprecedented” crisis within the United States and “will only bring more defeats” for Washington.

“The so-called ‘Economic D-Day’ is a smokescreen for the US’s own crisis: an unprecedented debt and skyrocketing interest costs. Doubling down on failed policies will only bring more defeats and the enmity of the Iranians,” Araqchi said.
He also warned that “US economic terrorism threatens the global economy and sovereignty worldwide,” according to a statement shared on social media.

Hours earlier, Trump emphasized the importance of achieving the “unprecedented isolation” of Iran and announced the “most devastating operation ever undertaken against any country.” “It will be an economic war and unprecedented isolation,” he declared.
“Oil smuggling, exchange lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies: all this must end now. You know who you are,” he said, naming the announcement himself as an “Economic D-Day,” referring to the Normandy landing during World War II.
