China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has insisted to South Korean authorities that the solution to tensions on the Korean Peninsula lies in the United States abandoning its “hostile policy” towards Pyongyang, while Seoul has emphasized that Beijing should play a constructive role in taking steps towards denuclearization.
“The fundamental solution to tensions on the Korean Peninsula lies in eliminating the root causes of the problem and urging the United States to abandon its hostile policy towards North Korea,” emphasized the Chinese Foreign Minister during the meeting with South Korea’s National Security Advisor, Wi Sung Rak, according to Beijing.
In this way, the Asian giant has stressed that “all parties” should redouble their efforts to resume dialogue and restore mutual trust on the peninsula. Wang took advantage of the trip to Seoul to applaud the peaceful coexistence perspective promoted by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, emphasizing the need to achieve a mechanism for lasting peace and stability between North Korea and South Korea.
On its side, Seoul has pointed to China as a key actor to cooperate based on the “shared interests of Korea and China in peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.” In a prior meeting, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun clarified that the government’s goal is the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, stressing that this is in Beijing’s interest, although for now China avoids going that far in its demands to Pyongyang.
In a meeting this Thursday, the South Korean president valued that Seoul and Beijing are “strengthening horizontal and mutually beneficial cooperation in the economic sector,” emphasizing that political trust and friendship between the two peoples are being “consolidated.”

“Since we met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, consecutively last year and this year, we are making tangible progress towards the full restoration of relations between Korea and China,” Lee said, who asked Wang to “maintain close strategic communication” with South Korean authorities on issues related to the Korean Peninsula.
On his side, Wang applauded Seoul’s change of tone, with a friendlier policy towards China. “The fact that relations between China and South Korea have fully recovered and have experienced positive progress this year demonstrates that a rational, pragmatic, and proactive policy towards China is fully in line with South Korea’s interests and the current trend,” they said.
The Chinese Foreign Minister emphasized that Beijing “is an important force for maintaining world peace and has consistently advocated for the political resolution of international and regional conflicts through dialogue.” Regarding the growing economic power of the Asian giant, Wang stressed that it is a “stabilizing factor” and provides “valuable certainty” as it will be the “largest market in the world.”
Thus, he spoke of China as a country “willing to share development opportunities with all countries, especially its neighbors”. “Embracing China is embracing the future, and walking alongside China is walking alongside opportunities,” he summarized in his meeting with Lee.
