Authorities in Peru confirmed damage to nearly thirty public buildings and reported at least three people injured, following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred 35 kilometers north of Coracora, in the Ayacucho region, in the south of the country.

“The Sectoral Emergency Operations Center (COES) of the Ministry of Education has reported damage to nine educational institutions in Ayacucho and two in Apurímac”, reported the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) in a statement.
It also announced “the preventive isolation of the affected areas” while the damage is assessed and “actions are coordinated to ensure the continuity of educational services in safe spaces.”
Likewise, the Institute detailed that “the COES of the Ministry of Health currently records a total of three injured persons”, all of whom were treated at the Coracora Support Hospital.
The same body, the note states, recorded “damage to ten Health Service Provider Institutions (IPRESS) in Ayacucho and two in Cusco,” although “care services remain operational.”

“Similarly, six establishments of the Ayacucho Health Network have suffered damage,” it adds, raising the total number of affected public buildings to 29.
The earthquake also affected the power grid of the region, with an interruption that “has affected 6,023 users in the province of Nazca (Ica department) and 2,990 users in the district of Puquio, Lucanas province, Ayacucho department.”
In response to this problem, the COES of the Ministry of Energy and Mines “has activated its contingency plan” to resolve the power outage as soon as possible and assist those affected.
So far, these are all the consequences recorded by INDECI, which stated that it “continues coordinating with regional and local authorities, monitors the situation, and urges Emergency Operations Centers to remain active.”
