Authorities in Peru have reported damage to nearly thirty public buildings and at least three people injured following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake on the Richter scale that occurred 35 kilometers north of Coracora, in the Ayacucho region, in the south of the country.

“The Sectoral Emergency Operations Center (COES) of the Ministry of Education has reported impacts on nine educational institutions in Ayacucho and two in Apurímac,” the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) stated in a communiqué in which it announced “the preventive isolation of the affected areas” while damages are assessed and “actions are coordinated to ensure the continuity of educational service in safe spaces.”
Likewise, the Institute has noted that, for its part, “the COES of the Ministry of Health currently records a total of three injured persons,” all of whom were treated at the Coracora Support Hospital. The same body, the note states, has recorded “impacts on ten Health Service Provider Institutions (IPRESS) in Ayacucho and two in Cusco,” although “care services remain operational.”
“Similarly, six establishments of the Ayacucho Health Network have suffered damage,” it adds, raising the total number of affected public buildings to 29.

The earthquake has also affected the region’s electrical grid, with an outage that “has affected 6,023 users in the province of Nazca (Ica department) and 2,990 users in the district of Puquio, Lucanas province, Ayacucho department.”
In response to this issue, the COES of the Ministry of Energy and Mines “has activated its contingency plan” to resolve the power outage as soon as possible and assist those affected.
So far, these are all the consequences recorded by INDECI, which has indicated that “coordination with regional and local authorities continues, the situation is being monitored, and it urges the Emergency Operations Centers to remain active.”
