The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that he hopes the end of the war with Iran “is near” and insisted that Tehran “wants to reach an agreement,” amid the stalemate in talks mediated by Pakistan to end the conflict opened in February by the offensive launched by the United States and Israel against the Asian country.
“Hopefully we are near the end of the war,” he said in statements to the press. “They want to reach an agreement; we will see how it turns out. Iran is very eager to reach an agreement,” he emphasized, despite Tehran’s repeated refusals to a pact if its terms and the agreement in the June memorandum of understanding are not accepted.
However, Trump has not commented on reports from the Axios portal about a possible meeting next week with leaders of Persian Gulf countries on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, allegedly to address the conflict and the post-war stage.
Trump himself stated last week that the war in Iran will end “just after” the midterm elections on November 3, while his vice president, JD Vance, indicated on Tuesday that the conflict “will enter a very different phase within a couple of months,” referring to the midterms.
Talks between Iran and the United States have seen no progress for weeks, amid mutual accusations of breaches of the memorandum of understanding signed in June in Pakistan and occasional exchanges of attacks, especially due to tensions around navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on the global economy.
