Peru’s Justice has rejected the appeal of former president Pedro Castillo to overturn the pre-trial detention he is under for an alleged corruption case, arguing that there is a risk of flight and, conversely, has extended his imprisonment until at least March 2027.

The Judiciary has confirmed the 12-month extension of pre-trial detention against the former president, investigated for alleged crimes of influence peddling and collusion, he will remain in prison until at least March 8, 2027.
Among its motivations is that Castillo does not have family, work, or residential ties in Peru, since his family is in Mexico, after receiving asylum in December 2022, which is why it maintains that there is a risk of flight.
Apart from this case, the former president is serving an 11-year prison sentence for rebellion crimes in relation to his failed self-coup attempt in December 2022. In this context, he has asked the current president of Peru, José María Balcázar, to consider a pardon, a decision that is expected to be made next week.
Less than a week before handing over command to the president-elect, Keiko Fujimori, Balcázar has also not ruled out that it will be precisely during the next term when a decision on this matter will be finalized as the new leader will take office on July 28.
