The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) would be the most voted in a federal legislative election with 30% support and a 10-point lead over the next option, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his Bavarian allies of the Christian Social Union (CSU), according to a poll published this Monday.

AfD would thus obtain for the first time 30% support in this poll by the polling company GMS after rising two points compared to the mid-July study, while CDU/CSU drop three points and would no longer gather enough support to renew the current coalition with the historic Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), which would be in fifth position with 11% support, the same as in July.
The third position would be for the Greens (14%), who grow one point, while in fourth place would be The Left (11%) after gaining one point compared to the previous study. The sixth place is for the Free Democratic Party (FDP, 4%) followed by the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW, 3%) and the Free Voters (1%). These last three formations would fall below the 5% minimum to obtain parliamentary representation.
In another recent Insa poll, Chancellor Merz is not considered “suitable” for the chancellor position by 78% of the population, while only 14% support his ability. 8% do not know or do not answer. Merz is unpopular even among CDU and CSU voters, with 58% against and only 36% in favor.
The study is based on 1,009 interviews conducted online and by phone between September 9 and 14 and has a margin of error of plus or minus three points.
AfD won the regional elections held on September 6 in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt although without enough support to govern with an absolute majority. Specifically, it achieved 43.8% of the votes and 39 deputies, three less than necessary for an absolute majority. Behind are the CDU (17%), the SPD (9.3%), the Greens (8.9%), The Left (8.6%) and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (5.3%).
On September 20 there are regional elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin and from the AfD leadership they have already called for early elections to replace Merz before the end of the year.
