In the wake of the earthquake that shook Colombia, President Abelardo de la Espriella publicly thanked Israel for its collaboration after the disaster.
The 7.4 magnitude seismic movement occurred on Monday, August 10, three days before the presidential inauguration. In its path, it left over 280 deaths and more than 3,970 injured, as well as an unforeseen emergency for the new Colombian administration.
With the leadership of the Latin American country and an earthquake in between, De la Espriella has handled his nation’s foreign policy with Israel, marking a shift for Bogotá. In this regard, he publicly expressed his gratitude towards Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration this Saturday.
“I had a very warm and enriching conversation with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. I deeply thanked him for all the humanitarian aid and for the rescuers that Israel has sent to Colombia in these very difficult times,” he said on his X account.
In the same message, he stated that “this is a new era for relations between Colombia and Israel: a relationship based on friendship, solidarity, cooperation, and mutual respect. Colombia and Israel, always friends and allies!“
From the official account of the Prime Minister, Netanyahu stated that he enjoyed the call with Colombia’s newly elected leader, in addition to thanking him for the recognitions to his country.
“I welcome this new chapter in our relations with Colombia. The best is yet to come,” said the Israeli leader.
