European Union sees an “opportunity” in the ceasefire in Lebanon but regrets its “precariousness” after the death of a peacekeeper

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon as an “opportunity” for the cessation of hostilities, but regretted that the attack against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which left a Serbian ‘blue helmet’ dead and two Spaniards injured, evidences the “precarious nature” of what was agreed.

In a message on social media, the head of European diplomacy referred to the agreement reached this Thursday between Lebanon and Israel for a ceasefire conditional on the total cessation of attacks by the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah and the evacuation of all its members from the southern sector of the Litani River.

“The latest ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon offers an opportunity to prevent a return to large-scale hostilities,” she welcomed, before immediately regretting the death of a UNIFIL ‘blue helmet’.

“The death of UNIFIL peacekeepers and the continuous clashes underscore the precarious nature of what was agreed,” said the Estonian politician, who also defended the need to strengthen the Lebanese state, empower its institutions, and restore its monopoly over the use of force to “reduce the threat” from Hezbollah.

Kallas referred to the decision adopted this Thursday by the Twenty-Seven, by which they agree to disburse 100 million euros to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) to “monitor, control, and guarantee” the security of Lebanon and to “maintain the state monopoly on weapons” and ensure the protection of civilians.

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, also referred to the ceasefire, condemning the attack suffered by UNIFIL in which two Spanish soldiers were injured, in addition to a Serbian ‘blue helmet’ dying, and expressed confidence that the ceasefire agreed the previous day by Israel and Lebanon with the mediation of the United States will now be observed.

“Our absolute condemnation of violence and all our support to those who risk their lives to defend peace under the flag of the United Nations,” the head of the Executive stated in a message on the social network ‘X’ after “four mortar attacks” occurred this Wednesday against the Spanish base Miguel de Cervantes, in Marjayoun.
