The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, expressed his “deep concern” over the military escalation in the Gulf, following new clashes involving Iran and the United States, as well as attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Through a post on X, Guterres noted that he is concerned about “the serious escalation and renewed military clashes in the Gulf,” including Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. attacks on Iran, and Iranian attacks on targets in neighboring countries.
“These attacks must stop,” said the UN chief.
The statement comes amid a new rise in tensions between Washington and Tehran. According to AP, the United States launched attacks on Iranian targets following an attack attributed to Iran on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, an incident that caused significant damage and left an Indian crew member missing.
Meanwhile, Iran responded with attacks on targets in neighboring countries hosting U.S. forces, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, and Oman, according to the same report.
Guterres warned that a return to large-scale hostilities would have serious consequences not only for the countries in the region but also for international stability.
“A return to large-scale hostilities would have catastrophic consequences for the peoples of the region, for international peace and security, and for the global economy,” he stated.
Finally, the UN Secretary-General called on both countries to resume dialogue.
“I urge Iran and the United States to urgently resume negotiations and address outstanding issues through diplomacy,” he concluded.
