The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has welcomed this Tuesday the veto announced by the United Kingdom, Canada, and France on trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied territory of the West Bank as a step “in the right direction,” but “insufficient.”

The Palestinian group stated this, referring to the announcement made by the British Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, and particularly to his “use of the term ‘ethnic cleansing’ to describe the crimes committed by Israeli settlers” in the West Bank.
Both actions “are important steps in the right direction, but insufficient,” said its spokesperson, Basem Naim, in statements collected by the newspaper Filastin, linked to Hamas.
“What is needed to achieve stability and peace in Palestine and beyond is the immediate implementation of the relevant international resolutions and the prosecution of ‘Israel’s’ war criminals, similar to the Nazi courts of Nuremberg, in Germany,” Naim added.
The British Foreign Secretary also announced that the United Kingdom will adopt sanctions against another group of extremist settlers behind acts of violence against Palestinian communities, as well as an expansion of existing measures for human rights violations to allow faster action to deter the expansion of settlements.
Andy Burnham’s government has adopted these measures in coordination with France and Canada, which will take similar actions to ban the import of products from illegal settlements. London has recalled that this adds to the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, and Norway, which have already adopted or started the process to veto trade with the occupied territories.
