Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni celebrated this Friday that her government has become the longest-lasting in the history of Italy, claiming the right-wing coalition formed by Brothers of Italy, the League, and Forza Italia, which has been in power since October 2022.

“Today our government becomes the longest-lasting in the history of the Italian Republic. It is a fact that I welcome with gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility. Because stability is not a record to show off, but the condition that allows a nation to plan, decide, keep commitments, and earn respect,” said the head of the Italian Executive in a message on social media after surpassing the barrier of 1,413 days.
Meloni, who also became the first woman to hold the position, has claimed the work of her Executive to reduce unemployment, support families, and increase the country’s security.
“The results are there, but we know well how many things remain to be done,” she indicated, while emphasizing the seriousness in public accounts and that her government has returned to Italy “weight and credibility on the international stage.”
At this point, she claimed the right-wing coalition, which she forms together with Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani, stating that stability is the result of a “united coalition, which governs with a common vision and has chosen to be together not against someone, but to carry out a project for Italy.”
Meloni emphasized that the longest governments in Italy’s history are right-wing – hers surpasses one of Silvio Berlusconi’s terms between 2001 and 2005. “Stability is built when an alliance shares values, goals, and a vision of the nation, not when the only reason to be together is to prevent others from governing,” she stressed.
At the same time, the prime minister thanked the popular support gained in 2022, when Brothers of Italy went from being a minority far-right group to being the country’s main force, and she has set out to renew the government next year, when Italy returns to the polls.
“We will return before the citizens with what we have done, with what remains to be done, and with our idea of the future. And once again, it will be they who decide if we deserve to continue this path,” she added, highlighting that the Italian Executive will continue “forward, with feet on the ground and eyes directed to the future.”
Italy has accumulated about 70 governments and more than 30 prime ministers over almost eight decades of the Republic, which reflects the rotation that has historically marked the country, with its Executives lasting, on average, barely 13 months.
