The Roman was designed to capture images of vast areas of space and provide data to study fundamental enigmas of modern physics. It has a field of view more than 100 times greater than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, launched on April 24, 1990.

Dark matter and dark energy, which make up 95% of the universe, will be at the center of the research. According to the background provided, the former is believed to act as a “gravitational glue” and the latter as a force driving the expansion of the cosmos.

The project’s lead researcher, Julie McEnery, stated that “recent observations suggest that our standard model of the universe is incorrect.” According to what was indicated, the telescope will help determine whether current models are accurate or if a revision in the conception of cosmic expansion is required.

Another challenge will be processing the volume of information generated by the observatory. “The telescope will generate about 1.3 terabytes of data per day, which means that basically no one can download the data onto their laptop,” Content said.

Access to the data will be open both to the scientific community and the general public. Additionally, the Roman will operate in conjunction with other observatories such as Webb and the Euclid probe.

Content maintained that the most significant discoveries could be unexpected: “I expect a lot, and in fact take for granted, that the most exciting scientific discoveries of the Roman will be a surprise, something we cannot foresee and that will lay the foundation for the next, deeper set of questions that future missions will have to address.”
