Caring alone, with no one to share the burden, is one of the most repeated experiences in the focus groups that the Colunga Childhood Observatory conducted to build the agenda “Early Childhood: Well-being, gaps, and proposals to strengthen public policy in Chile,” which has just been launched. Public health data confirm what they already knew: the distress after childbirth does not decrease over time, but continues to rise until six months postpartum, just when support networks – both family and institutional – begin to fail. Anonymous women who participated in those focus groups share, in their own words, what no statistic can explain alone.
