This was confirmed by NASA, based on reports from witnesses in New England and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which indicated a bright fireball, along with a loud noise.
The meteor is believed to have fragmented at an altitude of 40 miles over northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire, according to NASA. It is estimated that the energy released in its breakup is equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT, which explains the boom reported on social media by people in the area.

According to Eric Fisher, chief meteorologist at WBZ of the CBS News network, “this was a bolide (fireballs that explode), which are larger in size (they can be bigger than a few feet wide).”
In this regard, he explained that bolides mostly burn up before reaching the surface, but occasionally some fragments do reach the ground. “Given the trajectory, if some fragments landed, they could be in the Atlantic,” he said.
