The President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly, conveyed this Saturday to the US President, Donald Trump, that “the normalization of war and genocide is unacceptable,” referring to the war with Iran and the Israeli military offensive against the Palestinian territories.
“I have conveyed the firm opinion of the Irish people that the normalization of war and genocide can never be accepted,” Connolly explained in an official statement after a 20-minute meeting in Dublin.
The Irish president appealed to the “strong ties” centuries old between the two countries to “speak frankly to each other” and thus criticize the war and climate change “intrinsically interrelated” as they pose an “existential threat.”
Connolly recalled the hunger, colonization, and violence suffered by Ireland and the “path to peace” traveled that gives her country “a unique perspective on conflict resolution.”
Along the same lines, the president of the Irish Sinn Féin party, Mary Lou McDonald, sent a message to Trump urging him to stop supplying arms to Israel and “stop facilitating the genocide of the Palestinian people.”
That same Saturday there was a demonstration in Dublin to protest against Donald Trump and his visit to Ireland where Palestinian flags and balloons mocking Trump alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein could be seen.
