One of the main theses of the investigation into the derailment of a train that occurred last Friday in France is that it could be a possible deliberate act following the discovery of a section of rail on the track.
The president of the Normandy region, Hervé Morin, pointed out that “the most likely hypothesis today is that it is an act that is not simply deliberate, but can be classified as criminal. The locomotive overturned.”
The section of rail, with an estimated weight between 250 and 300 kilos, did not “just end up on the track like that, considering that a train passed an hour earlier and there were no works in the meantime.”
Likewise, the regional authority specified that the maximum speed on that section was 120 km/h.
The regional train (TER), which was carrying 186 passengers, derailed near the municipality of Cléon in Normandy. In total, 44 people were injured, including a young woman who was “in critical condition” and whose life is no longer in danger.
The accident led to the deployment of a significant emergency operation, with 130 firefighters, five medical teams, and 80 vehicles.
One day after the derailment, the traffic, which was immediately interrupted around the accident area, has already been restored, according to a spokesperson for SNCF Réseau, the company responsible for managing the railway.
