7.4 Earthquake shakes Colombia: injuries and severe building damage reported

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake was recorded at 8:34 a.m. this Monday in Colombia.

In its updated bulletin on the seismic event, the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) located the epicenter at 96 kilometers deep, in San José del Palmar, Chocó department.

Governor Nubia Córdoba reported the situation on her social networks.

“We have just experienced a serious seismic event in the Chocó department. We are concerned about the aftershocks. Although the epicenter was San José del Palmar, in the capital Quibdó there are injuries and serious damage to buildings. We are already assessing the damage to issue the first official report,” she said.

El Tiempo, one of Colombia’s most reputable media outlets, labeled the episode as an “earthquake” and reported that it was felt throughout the country.

The President of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, decided to take leadership of the coordination efforts in response to the emergency.

“I have ordered the installation of a Unified Command Post to coordinate the attention to the damages and the affected people. I have requested from the director of the (National Unit for Disaster Risk Management) UNGRD a detailed report on the situation and the most urgent needs. I will also be personally in Pereira to accompany those affected and verify the government’s response. You are not alone. The State is present and acting,” he stated in a message to the public on X.
