Amid his agenda to make New York accessible, at least for one night, the “babysitting” was public. Last Sunday, Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura hosted the first “Parents’ Night Out” in the “city that never sleeps.”

The plan consisted of providing nearly 300 children with an evening of fun at recreational centers across the five New York boroughs, while their parents enjoyed a few hours to themselves.
This free NYC Parks program allowed parents to leave their children, aged 6 to 13, for a few hours in the afternoon, thus having free time to do whatever they wanted.
Between 4 and 8 p.m. on Sunday, parents could drop off their children while city staff offered various activities, including a free dinner for attendees. According to NYC Parks, activities included sports, crafts, nature exploration, and more.
About 500 children registered and 265 attended, according to the New York Times, and it is not yet clear if another “Parents’ Night Out” event will be organized.
Thanks to a collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs, this initiative also gave parents the opportunity to enjoy free or low-cost cultural experiences throughout the city, while their children had fun at NYC Parks recreational centers. Participating cultural institutions included the Museum of the City of New York and the American Museum of Natural History.
When explaining the program, Mayor Mamdani stated: “All parents know that having a few hours for themselves can seem like a luxury. It shouldn’t be. That’s why we launched the city’s first “Parents’ Night Out” initiative: so parents can go to the movies, run errands, or have a date without worrying about who will watch the kids or how much it will cost.”
He related the initiative to his affordability agenda, stating that “making New York City more affordable is not just about lowering costs, but about giving people back their time.” “This administration is committed to making it easier to raise a family in the world’s largest city,” the mayor said.
“Parents and caregivers spend much of their time caring for others and deserve the chance to recharge,” said Tricia Shimamura, commissioner of the New York City Department of Parks. “Our first ‘Parents’ Night Out’ aimed to show that this administration works for New Yorkers by offering a free, safe, and fun experience for children, while giving families a few hours for themselves. Whether to enjoy a dinner or simply take a well-deserved break, we are proud to have offered an affordable program that supports families and strengthens our communities.”
A follow-up survey with participating parents and families reported how they spent the time they were not in charge of their children. 24% of participants said they took “time for myself,” while 19% and 18%, respectively, said they had a “date night” or a “dinner at a local restaurant.”
The most frequent responses after those were “shopping,” “spending time with family and friends,” “visiting a cultural institution,” and “relaxing and sleeping a little.”
Regarding this, a mother interviewed by the New York mayor’s office said: “This event was a real gift. As a working mother, it is very rare to have time for myself and free childcare, so having a few hours alone was really special. When I got home, I prepared something to eat and mostly used the time to plan for Monday to feel a little less overwhelmed. It seems simple, but it was very comforting to know that my city supported me and that my children were having fun with other wonderful kids from New York.”
The children seemed to have as much fun as their parents. The recreational centers offered an enriching social experience, with activities ranging from robotics to bracelet making. Even a six-year-old boy named Wyatt, who initially arrived crying and refused to stay, ended the night begging to come back in to keep playing.
