A oil tanker was hit this Wednesday by a projectile of unknown origin off the coast of Oman, in the middle of the Strait of Hormuz, the epicenter of the conflict in the Middle East and a stronghold used as a pressure tool between the United States and Iran.

“Local authorities reported that an oil tanker was hit by an unknown projectile, causing a fire on the ship that has already been extinguished,” reported the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center in the early hours of Thursday local time (Wednesday night in Chile).
Regarding the crew on board the affected vessel, the maritime authority indicated that all are “safe and accounted for”, also reporting that no environmental impact has been recorded.
Likewise, the British center, which indicated that an investigation has been opened, urged ships navigating the area to do so “with caution,” reporting “any suspicious activity.”

This attack occurred in an area close to another offensive that took place Monday night, when an oil tanker was hit by another projectile of unknown origin, suffering damage to its engine room and becoming inoperative.
It is worth remembering that this same Tuesday, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Qaribabadi, specified that his “phased plan” with Oman regarding Hormuz does not imply the immediate opening of the strait, while affirming that this pact also includes the closure of the southern corridor of the enclave, used by the U.S. for the transit of oil tankers.
