The operator of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, under Russian control as part of the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, accused Ukrainian forces on Thursday of launching a drone attack against a spent nuclear fuel storage facility at the site, an incident that resulted in no casualties and “no significant damage.”

Thus, it stated in a statement published on social media that the attack was carried out on Wednesday and added that “no environmental impacts have been recorded” as a result of the incident, on which Kyiv has not commented. “Radiation levels at the plant and its surroundings are within normal limits,” it added.
“It should be noted that an attack on a spent nuclear fuel storage facility is an extremely dangerous and unacceptable action, the consequences of which, if the spent nuclear fuel infrastructure is damaged, could be severe,” it explained.

In this regard, it emphasized that “any impact on the systems and structures that ensure the safe storage of spent nuclear fuel represents a potential threat to nuclear and radiological safety,” while highlighting that its staff “is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safe operation of the plant.”
Russian authorities have repeatedly accused the Ukrainian Army of launching attacks against the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant—the largest in Europe—and its surroundings and have warned of the risk of a nuclear accident, although Kyiv blames Moscow for such incidents. Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called to avoid these attacks due to the associated risks.
