Argentine senator and former Security Minister, Patricia Bullrich, came out to clarify her statements about the Strait of Magellan, after her remarks sparked questions in Chile. According to her explanation, it was a “confusion of names” and her intention was to refer to the Beagle Channel.

The former Security Minister sent a communication to the Chilean ambassador in Argentina, Gonzalo Uriarte, with the aim of clarifying her words and closing the controversy.
“I want to clarify a confusion of names that slipped into a radio statement. The channel I wanted to refer to is the Beagle Channel and never the Strait of Magellan, which belongs entirely to the sister Republic of Chile,” Bullrich said.
The parliamentarian added that she regretted “having generated uncertainty” and assured that the friendship relationship between both countries is “sincere and permanent”. Likewise, she asked the diplomat to convey her apologies to the Chilean authorities and President José Antonio Kast.
The controversy arose after Bullrich, in an interview with Radio Mitre, supported the plan of the Argentine President, Javier Milei, to reactivate and finance the Integrated Naval Base of Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego, a project started in 2022 during Alberto Fernández’s government.
“The concept of sovereignty is not who has a title deed, it is how we are positioned in the places that our country has to defend itself: on the northern border against drugs, on the southern border in what is the fight for the recovery of the Malvinas, and the control of the South Atlantic, the Strait of Magellan, the access to Antarctica,” the Argentine legislator assured.
