At least 25 people, mostly children and teenagers, died Saturday night in a traffic accident in Cape Verde during a student tour on the island of Fogo, according to authorities in a statement released Sunday by the public radio.
The bus was carrying 32 people returning to Sao Filipe after an excursion near the Pico do Fogo volcano, as part of an annual activity for children before returning to school, according to local officials.
Others were injured, some seriously, according to the civil protection representative of the municipality of Sao Felipe, Jose Canuto.

According to witnesses, the accident occurred when one of the bus tires exploded, after which the vehicle skidded and fell into a ravine about 30 meters deep, located in a valley with difficult access.
Major accidents are rare in Cape Verde, a West African archipelago of about 550,000 inhabitants, located in the Atlantic off the coast of Senegal, and which generally has roads in good condition.
