Trump envoys arrive in Ukraine for the first time since the start of the war with Russia

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, envoys of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, arrived in Ukraine this Sunday after a day of contacts in Moscow with Russian authorities, marking their first trip to Ukrainian territory since the outbreak of the war in February 2022.

Witkoff and Kushner were received in Kiev by Kirilo Budanov, head of the presidential office, and the head of intelligence services, Rustem Umerov, ahead of a round of talks following those held in Russia, according to the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN.

Minutes earlier, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that Kiev “is interested in bringing the war to an end” with Russia. “We met with our negotiating team before the meeting with the envoys of the President of the United States. We are ready for dialogue,” he said.

For his part, Yuri Ushakov, a Kremlin advisor, had indicated that the U.S. delegation presented various proposals to the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, on Saturday to address a solution to the conflict in Ukraine. “The U.S. representatives prepared thoroughly for this trip,” he said.

Witkoff and Kushner arrived in Moscow on Saturday on a U.S. military flight to present a proposal to end the war, as Trump had announced.

After that, they are scheduled to hold meetings in Kiev this Sunday as part of this new diplomatic push to end the conflict, which was unleashed in February 2022 by the invasion order signed by Putin.
