At least 12 people died and another 10 were seriously injured after a bus carrying Polish pilgrims overturned this Sunday, August 16, in Hungary, according to authorities from both countries.

The vehicle had departed from Serbia and was heading to Poland, with 57 passengers and two drivers. According to a statement from the Hungarian police, the accident occurred on the M3 motorway, when the bus was traveling towards Mezokeresztes, east of Budapest.
According to Hungarian press reports, based on police background, the driver of the vehicle may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The man was detained, according to what was stated by the Interior Minister, Gabor Posfai.
The disaster management agency reported that 11 people died at the scene, while a twelfth died after being taken to a hospital. “At this moment it seems that five are in critical condition,” said Andrzej Osiak, head of the Polish consular assistance service.

The Hungarian Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, announced the toll of 12 dead through a message posted on Facebook and expressed his “sincere condolences” to the families of the victims.
