The Supreme Court of Brazil authorized this Thursday to investigate Fábio Luís Lula da Silva, son of the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, for an alleged crime of influence peddling after obtaining a permit for the commercialization of medicinal cannabis, in programs linked to the Ministry of Health.

The magistrate André Mendonça was the one who gave the green light to open the procedure against the businessman also known as Lulinha, following a request previously made by the Federal Police, according to the newspaper Folha.
Specifically, the authorities are investigating the possible intermediation of the Brazilian president’s son in favor of lobbyist Antônio Carlos Camilo Antunes and another businesswoman in negotiations with the Brazilian Administration.
Suspicions around Lulinha began to circulate last year, to the point that Lula himself at that time stated that, if his son was involved, he should be investigated.
“No one will be spared. If my son is involved in that, he will be investigated,” said the head of the Planalto then, as recalled by the same Brazilian newspaper.
Upon learning of today’s decision by the magistrate, the head of the Brazilian Executive spoke out about it and assured that his position will not be used to “protect” Lulinha.
“He will have to prove that he is innocent as I proved to be (…) And if he is guilty, he will have to pay what everyone pays when they make a mistake,” emphasized Lula in an interview on the podcast Inteligencia Ltda.
Likewise, he insisted that his son “will have no privileges” and stressed that he would “never” ask a police officer or judge “not to do what is right,” indicating that Lulinha “knows he has no right to make mistakes” because he knows what his father has “been through.”
“He lived in my house what I went through (…) He knows that my wife -Marisa Letícia- died because of the misfortune of Operation Lava Jato. He knows it, that’s why he has no right to make mistakes”, stated the Latin American leader.
