China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, warned this Thursday that there are still “risks and challenges” within the framework of its bilateral relationship with the United States government, statements that come one month before Chinese President Xi Jinping makes a visit to the North American country.

Wang, who met with the United States ambassador to the country, David Perdue, indicated that although there has been an “improvement” in relations, which “serves the interests of both countries,” there are still highly relevant issues to resolve.
Thus, he stated that under the leadership of the two heads of state, the parties are working to build a “constructive, strategic, and stable relationship between China and the United States,” according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The facts show that improving and developing relations between China and the United States, coexisting peacefully on the basis of mutual respect, and ultimately achieving mutually beneficial cooperation, serves the fundamental interest of both peoples and meets the common expectations of the international community,” he clarified.
However, he emphasized that the two countries “must implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, focus on the established agenda, properly manage differences, eliminate interference, and overcome obstacles, as well as promote the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of relations between China and the United States.”

For his part, the U.S. ambassador highlighted the importance of these talks, which he described as “productive,” and said he is “working jointly to achieve a constructive relationship with strategic stability, fairness, and reciprocity,” as he stated in a message shared on social media.
The meeting took place a few days after Washington threatened to impose sanctions on Iran’s trading partners, measures that would directly affect China, one of the main buyers of Iranian oil.
The parties remain embroiled in a tariff dispute that has so far been suspended until November, an issue that both leaders will likely address during their meeting in September.
