Cuba was left in darkness again on Sunday night after the state-owned Electric Union (UNE) confirmed a new total disconnection of the National Electric System (SEN), just hours after managing to restore the supply following the partial blackout recorded on Saturday in the western part of the island.

Through its social networks, the company reported that the widespread interruption occurred at 22:43 hours (local time) and announced that it is working on activating restoration protocols to try to recover the electric service as soon as possible.
The new system failure occurs less than a day after UNE announced the restoration of supply in the western region of Cuba, including Havana, following a failure that affected large sectors of the country.
According to the state company, the partial blackout on Saturday was caused by a simultaneous trip of the 220-kilovolt transmission lines Matanzas-Cienfuegos and Matanzas-Santa Clara, an incident that caused the division of the National Electric System and subsequently the disconnection of the western zone of the island.
After that emergency, the company reported during the early hours of Sunday that it had managed to restore electric service in the affected provinces.

However, it warned that the system was still operating under fragile conditions because several thermoelectric units remained out of service due to breakdowns, while others continued to undergo maintenance work.
The new collapse of the SEN deepens the energy crisis that Cuba has faced for several years, marked by the deterioration of its electrical infrastructure, lack of generation capacity, and frequent supply cuts that affect both the population and economic activity.
In this context, Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez, reiterated over the weekend that the energy difficulties have been worsened by the sanctions and restrictions imposed by the United States, asserting that Washington’s goal is “to inflict the greatest possible punishment on the Cuban people to achieve their surrender.”
