The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) reported this Saturday that the death toll from the Ebola outbreak has risen to 864 and confirmed 2,181 cases since the emergency was declared on May 15.

Two months after the start of the emergency, the Ministry of Communication and Media of that country reported that the fatality rate currently stands at 39.6%, according to data collected up to July 16.
The report indicated that 56 new infections and 36 additional deaths were recorded in the previous 24 hours. Additionally, 722 patients are in “isolation or hospitalization” and 412 people have recovered from the disease, while the contact tracing rate rises to 66.9%.
So far, the eastern provinces of Ituri, the epicenter of the epidemic, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, and the Tshopo province in the north-central region have been affected.

“Response teams are strengthening surveillance, early detection, patient care, and contact follow-up activities in order to contain the spread of the disease,” the Ministry of Communication stated.
Uganda, where the epidemic spread, discharged the last Ebola patient hospitalized in the country this Thursday, after recording a total of 20 confirmed infections, of which 15 cases were considered imported from the DRC, including two deaths. Uganda thus began the 42-day countdown without new infections required to declare the end of the outbreak.
