The Supreme Court of Brazil prevented the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, from visiting former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro next week, who is under house arrest in Brasilia.
The decision was made this Saturday by magistrate Alexandre de Moraes, responsible for overseeing compliance with the measures imposed against Bolsonaro. The former president’s defense had requested authorization for Milei to visit him next July 25, during the Argentine president’s trip to Brazil.
That day, the Argentine president is scheduled to attend the Liberal Party convention in Sao Paulo, where the official proclamation of the presidential candidacy of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president’s son, is expected.
Milei himself had anticipated his intention to stop by Brasilia. “On the 25th I travel to Brazil. If Flávio Bolsonaro is nominated as a presidential candidate, I will be in São Paulo and will also make a stop in Brasilia to greet Jair Bolsonaro,” he declared on July 10.
De Moraes rejected the visit as part of the tightening of the house arrest conditions for Bolsonaro, after the judge considered that the former president violated precautionary measures by presenting a letter of support for his son’s pre-candidacy.
The ruling prohibits Bolsonaro from receiving visits for political or electoral purposes while the 2026 general elections are underway. It also prevents the dissemination of political or electoral manifestos prepared by the former president, even if distributed by third parties and regardless of the medium used.

The ruling also prohibits Flávio Bolsonaro from visiting his father for the next three months.
With these restrictions, the planned meeting between Milei and Bolsonaro was canceled, as the court considered that the meeting would have a political nature incompatible with the currently applicable conditions.
Bolsonaro is under house arrest at his residence in Brasilia for humanitarian reasons, while serving a 27-year prison sentence for crimes related to a coup plot against the current Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, following the 2022 elections.
During the judicial process, authorities have indicated that the former president attempted on several occasions to circumvent the imposed precautionary measures, including using social networks through third parties and the alleged tampering with his electronic ankle bracelet.
It was also recently reported that a pistol registered in Bolsonaro‘s name was found in the possession of one of his bodyguards during a road checkpoint, an incident that jeopardized the prison benefit allowing him to remain under house arrest while his health status is evaluated.
