The magistrate of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil, Alexandre de Moraes, suspended on Monday for 90 days the visitation rights of the senator and presidential pre-candidate, Flávio Bolsonaro, to former president Jair Bolsonaro and ordered the defense of the ex-president to clarify, within 48 hours, whether he was aware that a letter written during his house arrest would be published on his son’s social media.
Moraes considered that the reading of a letter from his father by Flávio Bolsonaro during a live broadcast on social media on Saturday constituted a disrespect to the decision that prohibited the former president from using social media “directly or through third parties,” and that the dissemination of the video represented an abuse of visitation rights.
With this decision, Flávio and Bolsonaro will not be able to see each other until mid-October, after the first round of the 2026 presidential elections, scheduled for October 4. Considering the date of the decision, the ban remains in effect until October 11, indicated the G1 media outlet of Globo.
Additionally, Moraes gave Bolsonaro’s defense team 48 hours to clarify whether he was aware that the letter would be published on social media.
“Finally, regarding Jair Messias Bolsonaro, the statement of his son Flávio Nantes Bolsonaro – ‘It is unmissable, a very important message he wants to convey to our entire nation’ – suggests that the convicted was fully aware that his letter would be disseminated on social media, which would also constitute a violation of the precautionary measure to which he is subject, and therefore, the Defense should clarify the facts,” said Moraes.
“The dissemination of videos on social media and the use of expressions with a semantic weight equivalent to an explicit request for votes may constitute an early electoral campaign during a period prohibited by law, and must be investigated by the Electoral Prosecutor’s Office,” he wrote.
In a handwritten letter delivered to Flávio, Bolsonaro called for “unification.” “Longing for contact with the people, I write at a decisive moment for the future of all. It is time to roll up our sleeves, put aside possible differences, and for each of us to strive for the pre-candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, the best option to free Brazil from corruption, violence, and poverty.”
The senator said that his father expressed his support for his son’s pre-candidacy. “My pre-candidate, I believe also yours, my spokesperson whom I trust to rescue Brazil and guide us towards peace and prosperity,” Flávio read. “Together, we will do everything for our homeland.”
