The leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, stated this Thursday that his country has “more than doubled” its nuclear weapons production capacity over the past five years, while recalling the directive to “further expand” this potential and to “continue increasing nuclear arsenals.”

“The production capacity of nuclear materials suitable for weapons has more than doubled during the last five years of strengthening the nuclear force,” highlighted the North Korean leader during a visit to a nuclear material factory, according to the state agency KCNA.
In this regard, the leader recalled the directive included in the latest five-year plan for nuclear strengthening to “further expand the production capacity of nuclear materials and continue increasing the arsenals” of this type in order to “progressively improve deterrence capability.”

Along these lines, he argued that the “prolonged confrontation with the fiercest enemies, the existing threats that worsen every moment, potential threats and unpredictable long-term crises” — circumstances he attributed to “the peculiarities of the Korean revolution” — highlight “the urgency and responsibility (…) to strengthen, both in quality and quantity, in a sustained and accelerated manner, nuclear deterrence.”
“This nuclear potential we now have is inconceivable without the valuable struggle we have waged over the past five years,” he added at the end of a speech he wanted to conclude by paying “tribute” to North Korean nuclear scientists.
