Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has insisted that her country will continue “tightening” surveillance in anticipation of a supposed massive arrival of migrants to the autonomous city of Ceuta this coming Saturday and has insisted that the “vast majority” of European countries share the drastic measures adopted by her Government, such as the suspension of the Schengen agreement with Spain.

“Nowadays, the vast majority of European nations share the stance that Italy has expressed in recent days,” Meloni said in an interview published this Friday with the economic newspaper ‘Milano Finanza’.
“Europe’s priority,” added the Italian prime minister, “is to protect its external borders from uncontrolled immigration, eliminate any risk to security and terrorism, and defend the freedom of movement that constitutes the basis of the Schengen system,”

Meloni insists that the “possible new wave” on August 15 forces Italian authorities to remain “extremely vigilant and to continue adopting all necessary measures” and has promised that her government “will continue working to consolidate the results achieved so far.”
