Pope Leo remembered the victims of that morning in 2001 and called for prayers for peace, amid the commemorations held in recent days in the United States.

The ceremonies have remembered the 2,977 people who lost their lives, with a main event held at the Zero Zone monument in New York, built on the site where the Twin Towers stood.
“At a time when conflict and violence afflict so many of our brothers and sisters, I invite everyone to pray that the Lord grants the world the gift of peace,” said the Pontiff.
The Pope also linked the remembrance of the tragic event that occurred 25 years ago with a call to maintain the commitment to peace.
“The memory of the tragic event twenty-five years ago urges us to renew our commitment to peace, above all through prayer, which we entrust to the intercession of the Virgin Mary,” he said.
Finally, Leo greeted a crowd of approximately 15,000 people gathered in St. Peter’s Square, where banners and flags from different countries were waving.
Some of the attendees also sent messages of good wishes to the Pontiff, who will celebrate his 71st birthday this Monday, September 14.
