Christopher Nolan has stated on more than one occasion that he approaches each project as a director as if it were his last. That could explain his weakness for creating large productions, one more ambitious than the other, and for not being afraid to take the plunge with ideas that would intimidate much of his peers.
The very idea of bringing the Odyssey to the cinema appeared as the greatest challenge of his career. With almost 3,000 years of history, it is one of the fundamental works of Western literature, having been adapted in various formats previously and inspiring a wide range of creations of different kinds (from James Joyce’s Ulysses to a SpongeBob movie and the suffocating Beau Is Afraid by Ari Aster).
The author of Dunkirk (2017) tackled the task applying his own codes: with IMAX cameras, a preference for practical effects, a star-studded cast, and filming that moved between Morocco, Italy, Greece, Scotland, Iceland, and the United States. And once again he has triumphed both artistically and commercially, a double that few Hollywood filmmakers master with the same excellence.
In its first weekend at the box office, it grossed US$264.1 million worldwide and became the highest-grossing release of the director’s career. It surpassed the US$249 million that The Dark Knight Rises (2012), the third and final part of his saga starring Christian Bale, totaled 14 years ago.
That milestone leaves a curiosity: the Batman trilogy began with Batman Begins (2005), the film he made instead of Troy (2004), the adaptation of the Iliad, which ultimately went to Wolfgang Petersen. Now, at the peak of his career, he imposes himself with his version of Homer’s tale.
The premiere of The Odyssey allowed him to break other records: it is the third-best debut of 2026 – only behind Super Mario Bros: The Movie and Toy Story 5 – and the first outside of animated cinema.
Meanwhile, in Chile it also had a premiere with full theaters and sold-out tickets. At the close of this edition, Culto was able to find out that the film was close to displacing The Dark Knight Rises, Nolan’s best opening for a feature film, with 191,000 viewers.
Although the scale of its earnings will depend on its performance in the coming weeks – Spider-Man: A New Day arrives on Thursday the 30th – the industry assumes it will comfortably recover its budget (US$250 million) and consolidate itself as one of the most successful titles of the year.

There may be a long way to go until the next Oscar ceremony (scheduled for Sunday, March 14, 2027), but the warm reception of The Odyssey has caused that conversation to move forward and begin to take shape. Media such as Variety already anticipate that the film will have a strong presence in the list of nominees to be revealed next January 21.
That outlet takes for granted that it will be considered in all technical categories, including Best Original Song, in recognition of When I’m Home, produced and voiced by James Blake and Ludwig Göransson, with Nolan himself collaborating on the lyrics. That presence could grow – a total of ten – if it achieves nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The best-positioned cast member in that competition is Matt Damon. Nominated five times for the Oscars – he won Best Original Screenplay alongside Ben Affleck for Good Will Hunting (1997) – the actor could lead the cast’s presence. “His portrayal of the legendary king of Ithaca is complex, physically visceral, and dynamically intense,” Variety noted.
In a film full of strong performances, some of the most outstanding are Anne Hathaway (Penelope), Samantha Morton (the sorceress Circe), Robert Pattinson (Antinous), and John Leguizamo (Eumaeus).
The last two have never aspired to the Oscars. The Colombian actor could be helped by the perception that, after a long career in Hollywood, the time has finally come for recognition through the awarding of a golden statuette (Queens or Kings? earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor, but not an Oscar).
That said, the American outlet warned that it has been rare for Nolan’s actors to enter the Academy Awards radar. While Heath Ledger won thanks to his role in The Dark Knight (2008), and Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. did the same with Oppenheimer, Guy Pearce (Memento), Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception), and Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar) were excluded at the time.
This time the outlook looks encouraging and, with the right campaign, The Odyssey could make history. If it advances in those ambitions, it could not only rival the haul of Oppenheimer – which achieved 13 mentions and won seven – but also approach or even break the record for the highest number of nominations. A mark that since this year belongs to Sinners (2025), which achieved 16 nominations and won four.
