Hayden Panettiere was born under the spotlight. Within months of life, she debuted in commercials and by the age of five had appeared in 15 ads. As an adult, she starred in well-known series and movies that impacted the generation that grew up during the 2000s. Never – in her 36 years – was she away from media attention, experiencing all the lights and shadows that come with occupying that place.
The American actress delved into this subject in This is me: A reckoning, the memoir she released last May, where she elaborates on postpartum depression, addiction, trauma, domestic violence, and loss. “I can tell people the truth. I can tell them what really happened, and what really happened is often more entertaining than anything someone else can make up,” she told Entertainment Weekly before its release in bookstores.
The combination of that tumultuous journey and its outcome produces one of the most tragic stories Hollywood has seen in recent years. During the last hours of this Sunday, the actress was found dead in Greenville, South Carolina, according to a representative who confirmed it to ABC News. She was five days away from turning 37.
“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to everyone who knew her, and to the millions who saw her on screen,” said her father, Skip Panettiere, in a statement shared with that outlet, requesting privacy “while our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”
Part of the ABC series One life to live between 1994 and 1997, the actress participated in Remember the Titans (2000), starring Denzel Washington, and lent her voice in animated films like A Bug’s Life (1998) and Dinosaurs (2000). She also teamed up with Disney in Ice Princess (2005), alongside Joan Cusack, Kim Cattrall, and Michelle Trachtenberg, another star of her generation who died prematurely.
Stardom came with her leading role in Heroes, the NBC series in which she played a cheerleader with the ability to instantly heal any physical wound and stay alive no matter the severity of the damage. It was the time when she graced multiple covers and became one of the most promising young figures in the industry.
But, as in other moments of her career, the matter also had a bitter side: as revealed in This is me: A reckoning, she suffered from body dysmorphia during those years (she never forgot a headline about her “cellulite”) and had to deal with public scrutiny regarding the age difference with actor Milo Ventimiglia, also part of Heroes, with whom she dated between 2007 and 2009.
On the creative front, the experience was also bitter, especially from the third season onward, when “the plots were confusing, the script often bland, and some of the characters’ motivations and dramas no longer seemed believable,” she recounted in the book.
“The rest of the cast and I were frustrated and upset, but there was little we could do. We did our best to make the characters as interesting as possible, but in the end, our influence was limited,” she added.
After completing the six seasons of the series Nashville (for which she was nominated twice for Golden Globes), Hayden Panettiere’s career never regained the same visibility.
Personal ups and downs interfered with her trajectory. The postpartum depression she suffered after the birth of her daughter in December 2014 was particularly complex. From her perspective, part of its origin was linked to the difficult relationship she had with her mother, who during her childhood was her manager and acting coach, and whom she fired after concluding her interest was purely financial.
“She seemed like someone else’s baby, not mine,” she revealed in her memoirs. “I had always heard that mothers feel an instant wave of love when they see their baby, but I felt nothing. Kaya was just there and now I had to find a way to connect with her. It seemed an impossible task, and it had only been a day.”
In response to that situation, she began drinking excessively and fell into alcoholism. Later, when she took action, she became “completely dependent” on the pills prescribed to her in rehab.

The former professional Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko, the father of the child, decided to return to his country and requested custody, but Panettiere avoided starting a legal battle and chose simply to sign the papers. The reason? To focus on her own well-being. According to her latest interviews, she regularly traveled to Ukraine to visit her and they maintained constant communication. In fact, she recently stated that her daughter had discovered the third part of Stick It 3: All or Nothing (2006), where she played the lead.
Also, recently Panettiere opened up about her relationship with Brian Hickerson, a boyfriend who abused her. “You never forget the first time someone slaps you, nor the last,” she said, also noting that “slaps turn into punches.” She also explained that on one occasion he supposedly disfigured her face so severely that she did not leave the house for weeks.
And she detailed the pain caused by the death of her brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died in February 2023 due to cardiomegaly and complications with the aortic valve. She expressed that she believed she would never get over his loss.
The actress had resumed her career in the fifth and sixth parts of the Scream saga, which were released in theaters in 2022 and 2023, respectively. There she reprised her role as Kirby Reed, the character she first played in the fourth part.
The actress used her memoirs to recount several episodes that show the worst side of the industry she inhabited since she was little. On one occasion, when she was 19, she was at a star-studded party in an apartment in Los Feliz (Los Angeles) and an “Oscar-winning actor and director” cornered her just before leaving the place.
“I have gum stuck on my pants,” said the man, tricking her into looking at his crotch, fully exposed. “I looked down and shuddered. The testicles of this respected, award-winning actor were hanging from the open zipper of his pants… Until that moment, Hollywood men had always been kind and respectful to me. There might have been a kiss on the lips here and an inappropriate comment there, but nothing had crossed the line,” she noted.
Another incident happened when she was 18. An actress friend – whom she calls “Stella” – invited her to a party on a yacht in the south of France and accompanied her to the quarters of a famous British singer-songwriter in his early 30s who lay naked in bed, with the lower part of his body covered by sheets.
“My thoughts were confused, but I had spent my whole life trusting that others looked out for my well-being. Being ‘controlled’ was usual, to the point that I lost faith in my intuition. I felt my heart pounding. As I settled under the sheets, I dissociated. I no longer felt my body as mine,” she wrote, specifying that she managed to escape before anything worse happened.
Those and other situations – an “important NBC executive” kissed her on the lips at a party in 2008 while she starred in Heroes – were used as examples by Variety to conclude that “Hollywood failed to protect Hayden Panettiere.”
“Hopefully her death serves as a reminder to those in power in the industry that young women need to be heard, need to feel safe, and need to be protected from their darkest characters,” the outlet argued.
The circumstances of Hayden Panettiere’s death have become clearer over the hours. Authorities reported that an “acquaintance” of the actress called 911 and that the responding personnel provided medical assistance, but she was declared dead at the scene.
People obtained an audio of that call in which officers talk about an “overdose” and a “cardiac arrest”. However, the investigation continues and the official cause of death will be revealed after the autopsy.
