The President of the United States, Donald Trump, expressed this Tuesday his “full support” for the far-right candidate for the presidency of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, and hinted that the relationship between the two countries depends on his victory.
It is worth remembering that the lawyer obtained first place in votes during last Sunday’s election day, where according to the preliminary count, he secured 43.74% of the votes, while in second place was Iván Cepeda, with 40.90%, which led the current president, Gustavo Petro, to refuse to recognize the results.
In any case, now the runoff on next June 21 will decide who will become the future president of Colombia.
In this context, Trump used his profile on Truth Social to support De la Espriella, whom he described as “an intelligent, strong, and tough leader.”
“Abelardo tirelessly fights for his great country and its people and loves them, just as I love the United States,” Trump began.
“As president, Abelardo would have resounding success leading Colombia to boost the economy, create jobs, promote trade, stop illegal immigration, stop illegal immigration, fight crime and drugs, and restore public order!” Trump bet regarding the lawyer’s potential victory.

The White House occupant stated that “due to his great achievements and his personal political support, it is an honor for me to give Abelardo my full support“.
“‘The tiger’ Abelardo de la Espriella will not disappoint the wonderful people of Colombia,” added the magnate.
Likewise, Trump pointed out that the fate of the relations between the two countries depends on the upcoming election result.
“Abelardo will face a radical left Marxist in the second round on June 21. The results of these elections are crucial for the future of Colombia and its relationship with the United States,” the Republican stated.
