Federal authorities warned this Thursday that foreign terrorist organizations “continue to encourage attacks in the United States and have spread propaganda related to 9/11 before the anniversaries of the attacks that left nearly 3,000 fatalities in 2001.

According to the government bulletin accessed by ABC News, the FBI is concerned that terrorists on U.S. soil may be inspired to commit acts of violence or make false threats in response to the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and that such extremists have shown a willingness to act with little or no warning.
The document details that messages from foreign terrorist organizations, “in combination with ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, could exacerbate existing grievances against the United States and contribute to mobilization toward violence.”
Similarly, on Thursday morning a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson referred to the threat, stating that the North American country faces “a higher and increasingly complex terrorist threat environment,” and added that this environment “has changed significantly since the September 11, 2001 attacks.”
“Before 9/11, the main concern came from centralized international terrorist organizations. Today, those groups remain a threat, but the landscape is broader and more dispersed,” the DHS spokesperson told the U.S. media.

He then added that “now, individuals and small cells plan attacks independently, often motivated by a variety of ideological and political goals.”
The same source, who asked to remain anonymous, warned that foreign terrorist organizations, such as ISIS and Al Qaeda, continue to seek ways to carry out or inspire attacks in the United States.
“At the same time, domestic terrorists continue to plan acts of violence, often motivated by anti-government ideas and the desire to destabilize society,” he added.
In the last year and a half, the FBI has arrested at least 16 people within U.S. territory for allegedly planning or supporting plans to kill Americans on behalf of Al Qaeda or ISIS, authorities reported.
