The United States Government announced this Monday that it has revoked the visas of more than 175,000 people since the beginning of President Donald Trump’s term in mid-January 2025.
The State Department specified in a statement that it has taken this measure against “foreign nationals who violated the conditions of their visas, committed crimes, incited violence against U.S. citizens, defrauded Americans, abused our immigration system, or endangered national security.”
U.S. authorities mostly withdrew these permits due to “incidents” with law enforcement, particularly for “assaults, driving under the influence, thefts, and drug-related crimes.”
“A significant portion of the visas were revoked for reckless driving, sexual assault, child abuse, fraud, and embezzlement, as well as other crimes,” the diplomatic department added, framing this measure within its “ongoing” investigations, “which ensure that visa holders (…) do not endanger Americans.”
Likewise, the Department led by Marco Rubio assured that it “will continue identifying, investigating, and revoking the visas of foreign nationals who pose a threat to the security of the American people” and reminded that “a U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right.”
