The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has offered European Union aid to Nepal following the “devastating” floods recorded in the north of the country, which so far have left at least 22 dead and hundreds of people missing, and has expressed her condolences to the families of the victims.

“We are prepared to mobilize European aid,” said the head of the community executive in a message on social media, in which she also detailed that the European satellite system Copernicus has already been activated to help map the affected areas in Nepal and support the response on the ground.
“Devastating floods have hit communities in Nepal and China. My thoughts are with all those affected, especially the families who have lost loved ones or are still awaiting news. We also think of the brave emergency teams,” she indicated in a message.

The floods, caused by the overflowing Bhotekoshi River in the Rasuwa district, a mountainous district in northern Nepal near the border with Tibet, have left at least 22 people dead and hundreds missing, according to authorities in the country this Wednesday.
Along the riverbed, dozens of settlements and infrastructures have been severely affected by the water, which has also caused extensive damage in China, on the other side of the border area, especially at the Gyirong pass. The Nepalese Army has indicated that, for now, 88 people have been rescued alive.
